The Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture in the Faculty of Agriculture invites applications from qualified candidates for a two-year limited-term Instructor position within our Veterinary Technology Diploma program whose duties include in-person teaching responsibilities. Salary will be appropriate to qualifications and experience. This position will be located in the Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie Agricultural Campus, Truro, Nova Scotia. Qualifications for the Position
Veterinary Technology diploma from an accredited program with approximately three years’ relevant experience in companion animal private practice is required. Must be a Registered Veterinarian Technician eligible to work in Nova Scotia. Must be a member in good standing with the Eastern Veterinary Technician Association or eligible for membership prior to the start date.
Must have demonstrated competency in companion animal surgical assisting, routine clinical pathology procedures, and veterinary nursing procedures such as blood collection, anesthesia and radiology. Proven excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills are required as is the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Must have demonstrated solid computer skills and be familiar with lab safety guidelines. Interest and experience in lab animals and exotic pet species is desirable.
Teaching experience is desirable. Please describe any formal teaching experience or mentoring that you have had in either a classroom, online, or practical setting. Demonstrated experience with curriculum development or writing original content for the purpose of public education would be considered an asset. Teaching duties will require the use of PowerPoint, BrightSpace (our LMS system), Microsoft Teams, and Collaborate. Experience with these tools and platforms will also be considered an asset.
Duties of the Successful Applicant
The successful applicant will teach practical labs (in person) in anatomy/physiology clinical exercises, and clinical pathology. Teaching classroom/lecture content could be either online or in a classroom setting. Some curriculum development or revision will be required and will be done under the direction of the primary instructor and the Program Director.
There will also be shared on-call duties with other instructors for our teaching hospital (no public patients). (Please note: there is no extra compensation offered for this on-call service.) Some labs and clinical work may be required outside of usual working hours.
